January 2021

January began with a melancholy atmosphere. It was the one year anniversary of my Mother’s death. While I was sad, I was also looking forward to new life here on the farm. We raise Nubian, LaMoncha, and Spanish goats and January through February is kidding time for us. We had to date 6 moms ready to drop, and possibly another . . . just not sure if she took.

Having finished with lunch, on January 10th, we walked outside for our guests to see the goats, and Patches was in the midst of birthing twins. Rooky and Cookie.  Births are always exciting, especially if we have the opportunity to witness it.  Patches was an experienced mom and did beautifully again.  We moved her and her twins into a separate pen. Her mom, Freckles, followed, but had to be moved soon afterwards, because she wanted to nurse her grands.

The following morning, Randy went out to feed animals before going on the road to stock stores, and found that Freckles had delivered triplets and was busy cleaning them up and nursing. A nice highlight to a dreary start of the new year.
